Planning a Container Vegetable Garden

Nothing beats vegetables straight from your home garden. The simple pleasure of a big, red, juicy tomato that in one bite fills your mouth with fresh, succulent flavor;  or a crisp pod filled with mouthwatering peas just waiting to be devoured. These veggies and other delicious varieties can easily be achieved in a home container garden. Container vegetable garden planning, designing, planting, and growing can be accomplished by all gardeners from the beginner to the expert. With the right care and basic vegetable planting knowledge, just about any type of home grown vegetable can flourish in a container garden.

Choosing your Vegetables. Before you start planting, you will need to carefully consider what vegetables you wish to plant. Easily grown vegetables include: peas, potatoes, tomatoes, carrots, and cucumbers. You may also want to consider plant companions. Once you choose the type of vegetables you wish to grow, you will need to make the decision of seeds or seedlings. You can start a vegetable garden from both, but you will want to consider the advantages and disadvantages of both.

Choosing a container for your vegetable garden. The larger your container, the easier it is to maintain your container vegetable garden. Make sure the container you choose has enough room for your plants to grow and has good drainage. You can use plastic containers, glazed ceramic containers, or wood containers. If you are having trouble keeping your plants moist, try placing a dish underneath the container and fill it with water.

Housing your container garden. Sunlight, sunlight, sunlight. The most important thing vegetables need to grow is sunlight. However, if you live in a really hot climate, you may need to shade your plants during midday. Vegetables should be exposed to 6 hours of sunlight daily.

In order to grow a successful vegetable container garden, vegetable garden planning needs to be made to help design, manage, and harvest your vegetable plants.
