Grown in Europe for thousands of years. These small, self-fruitful trees grow about 8 to 10 feet tall. They have long, tropical-looking foliage, white flowers at the branch tips in spring and unusual 1 inch diameter round, brown fruits that are collected in the fall after first frosts. Fruits must be allowed to ripen for several weeks before using, a process called 'bletting'. They become soft and spicy with a cinnamon applesauce flavor. Fruits may be eaten raw or made into jelly. Begins bearing 2 to 3 years after planting. Plant in full to half day sun. 2 to 3 ft. bareroot trees. Zones 5-9.
