Sweet, tart fruit

Cornelian cherries are actually dogwoods, grown for their delicate yellow flowers in early spring, yellow and red fall color and bright red fruits. These Ukrainian selections are prized for their large, sweet-tart, juicy red fruits; delicious fresh or used in baked goods, preserves, juice, and wine. Its Vitamin C content is about twice that of oranges. The fruit softens when ripe, usually in late August. Somewhat self-fertile, but planting two varieties ensures bigger crops and bears 2 to 3 years after planting. Grow as a shrub or small 12 to 15 foot tree.
