Brussels sprouts is an upright, cool season cruciferous vegetable that produces small cabbage-like "sprouts" at leaf nodes. Plants are very cold tolerant and resist light frosts and snows.

How to Grow

Sow seed indoors 4 to 6 weeks before the last spring frost, and plant outdoors after the frost danger has passed. Cover seed lightly with about ¼ to ½ inch of soil. Transplant seedlings deeper than when grown in pots, with the lowest set of leaves just above the soil surface. Space plants 2 to 3 feet apart with 3 to 4 feet between rows.


For full sun in fertile, well-drained soil. Sprouts mature at the bottoms of the stem first. The top of the stem can be pinched lightly to speed up maturing of the sprouts. The flavor and sweetness of the sprouts is improved after frost, so for the best tasting sprouts harvest in late fall to early winter. If a hard freeze threatens before harvest is finished, plants can be uprooted and hung upside down in a basement or garage. Plants can be overwintered in mild winter climates. Benefits from staking to support plants, especially in windy areas. 

Fertilizer Recommendations

A moderate to heavy feeder that benefits from regular fertilization. Use full rates of ALGOplus All Purpose 6-6-6 liquid fertilizer or Neptune Fish & Seaweed Fertilizer 2-3-1.

Common Problems

Brussels sprouts are usually free of serious problems, but may be attacked by insects including aphids, flea beetles, and caterpillars. Diseases including white mold and downy mildew sometimes occur. Captain Jack's Deadbug Brew can be used to control insects. Serenade biological fungicide can be used to prevent disease problems.

Thought to have originated in Belgium in the late 1200s. It is a very nutritious vegetable high in vitamins A and C, fiber, and folic acid. It is also rich in compounds believed to have anti-cancer properties.
