Growing Sweet Peas

Growing Sweet Peas

Jungs Giant Everblooming

test

A beautiful, old-fashioned climbing plant with strongly-scented flowers. Very easy-to-grow from seed. Can sow outdoors in spring as soon as soil can be worked, 4 to 6 weeks before the lat spring frost, or sow indoors 4 to 6 weeks earlier. Soak seed overnight in warm water or nick with a file before planting. Darkness promotes sprouting, so plant seed 1 to 2 inches deep. Harden seedlings by gradually exposing them to outdoor conditions before planting in the garden.

Maintenance

Plants tolerate light frosts as well as some heat. Prefers cool, moist, well-drained soil with plenty of organic mater. Best in full sun, but tolerates some shade in hot climates. Use an inch or two of organic mulch to help keep soil cool. Provide plenty of irrigation as vines grow. Vines are self-supporting as they climb trellises with their grasping tendrils. Not difficult to remove from support structures after vines die back. Cutting off stems of faded flower prevents pods from forming and keeps plants flowering strongly. Can sow in fall for spring flowers in mild climates (hardiness zone 7 and warmer).

Fertilizer Recommendations

Use low rates of Algoflash Flowering Plant 4-6-7 Liquid Fertilizer (51087), Neptune Fish & Seaweed Fertilizer 2-3-1 (51221), or Osmocote 14-14-14 (51173).

Alternative Products

Other annual plants with fragrant flowers include Perfume Mix Hybrid Nicotiana (07106) and Moonflower (07002). Syringa Chinensis Red Rothomagensis (21029) is a fragrant hardy lilac shrub.

Complimentary Products

A low to moderate feeder, plants benefit from occasional fertilization in garden beds and regular fertilization in containers. Can use Tomato Trellis 5' X 30' (53284) to create support for plants.

Product Recommendations

Plantable 2-1/4" Round Jiffy Peat Pots (53222) are good for starting seed indoors.

Sweet Pea Facts

Generally not bothered by pests or problems. Powdery mildew is an occasional problem, especially in overly dry conditions. Slugs will sometimes attack plants. Can be grown in large pots, but requires frequent watering and fertilization, especially when grown with other plants in mixed containers. The plant's latin name "odoratus" refers to the strong fragrance of the flowers.
