we had a damp year and many of these developed rot inside the heads - probably won't bother with them again

We're very sorry you did not have a good experience with the Danish Ballhead Cabbage. Internal browning or tipburn is a fairly common problem with cabbage. It is caused by localized Calcium deficiency. Affected areas are more prone to infection by organisms that cause rot. Calcium is not easily moved in plants, and irregular moisture conditions are the most common cause of tipburn. To prevent this problem, ensure the soil is well drained. Create raised beds amended with organic matter in heavy soils to improve drainage. Keep plants watered during dry periods. Avoid over fertilization with nitrogen. Megaton (01550) is resistant to tipburn.
