Originally grown by the Arikara Indian tribes of North Dakota. Sturdy 10 to 12 foot plants can be either single or multi-headed. The yellow petaled heads grow 12 to 16 inches across and yield black, white and streaked variations of seeds. Traditionally the seeds were ground and used to make sunflower seed balls that warriors used for a boost of energy.
