(A. tuberosa) Zones 3-9. Butterflies are attracted to the fragrant nectar of this rugged, sun-loving perennial. Clusters of star-shaped flowers are produced in July and August. In fall the milkweed-type seed pods can be picked for dried arrangements. Bushy plants vary in height from 12 inches to 3 feet or more. They are slow to appear in spring, so mark them well. Tolerates poor, sandy soil. Orange flowers. Full sun.

The blooms were great, but they are not vigorous enough to withstand any competition in my garden - they are OK if you baby them

This is an excellent native plant for North American gardens. Bees love it, and I hope that some Monarch caterpillars will eventually use it as a food source, since I planted it for them! Butterfly Weed's intense shade of orange is very visible and attractive from a distance when planted in large groups.
