Enjoy your own home-grown olives
This Spanish variety is a very attractive, slow-growing, naturally compact tree with lovely gray- green foliage. It's ideal for growing in a large container on your deck or patio, and will often surprise you with fruit the year after planting. The gourmet quality olives are revered for eating and oil. The olives begin ripening about early October. The trees are self-fertile and pollinate by wind, but you can ensure pollination by moving pollen from flower to flower with a small brush. The trees should have at least one-half day or more of sun. Placing the tree on the south or west side of a building will accelerate ripening. Move the olive tree inside when temperatures fall below 15 degrees F. It's maximum height will be 8 to 10 feet.
