Proper pruning of Clematis:
Group 1- The Clematis in this group flower in the spring on growth produced the previous season. They generally do not need to be pruned, but if some pruning is necessary, do so within one month after flowering is finished.
Group 2- The Clematis in this group bloom in early summer on growth produced the previous season, followed by a rebloom in summer or fall on new growth. In late winter or early spring, cut stems back to a strong pair of well-developed buds and fasten the stems onto their support.
Group 3- The Clematis in this group are later flowering and bloom on new growth during summer and fall. In late winter or early spring cut back to 12-18 inches from the ground.
