Incredible Apple Variety
Feb 27, 2025 | By Kathleen A Deming
The original apple tree in my yard when I bought my house in 1970 was a mature full-size Duchess of Oldenburg, which had probably been planted in the 1920's or 1930's . That tree continued to produce until it's dying season in 2005, when it had only a crescent of bark left and one branch at the top. Its apples made splendid sauce, pie, and apple butter. The forester, who saw it in one of its last seasons, said that it was the oldest apple tree he'd ever seen. I was hardy and productive. I'm sure that if you have space for only a small tree that you will be deligted with this tree and its apples, which are perfect for cooking. KD
